History of Tanning

Sebaceous Pores

The sebaceous pores are extremely microscopic glands in the skin which secrete an oily/waxy type matter called sebum to literally lubricate the skin and hair. They are found mainly on the face and scalp though they are distributed around the body except on the soles of your feet and palms of your hands.

The Sebum acts to protect and waterproof the skin. It also keeps the skin from drying out, being brittle and cracked by dehydration.

Sebum is odourless but its bacterial breakdown can produce odours.

Sebum is the main cause of some people experiencing "oily" (bad hair days) hair.

Excessive sebum can be washed with shampoo (for oily hair) rather than using bath soap. Sebum will remain at lower tremperatures, so when rinsing your hair, one should always use warm water (between 37-38C, 98-100F).
