CHEMICAL skin exfoliation refers to gels, lotions, and creams that are used on a daily basis after your skin has been washed/cleansed and dried. It uses acidic chemicals to remove the dead skin cells. The acid simply eats away at the top layer of dead cells.

Most of the chemical exfoliants come in the form of a chemical peel (that can be either gentle or agressive). Chemical Peels are only recommended for those with extremely dry or aging skin due to their inherent method of working. Beware some chemical peels can have bad side effects to your skin.

Do's and Don'ts

• DO consult your doctor, dermatoligist or beautician (a certified/qualified skin care therapist) with regard to whether your skin will accept chemical exfoliation.
• DO select products that are suited to YOUR body and face carefully.
• DO purchase from reputable physical or online shop.
• DO read the labels and ingredients.
• DO seek a patch test if in any doubt.
• DO NOT over-exfoliate. This can do more damage to your skin than not exfoliating at all. Over-exfoliating will sensitise and make your skin more susceptible to harmful UV rays.
• DO NOT use Chemical exfoliation products designed for the body on your face. One product doesn't do it all. It can result in damage to your skin.
• DO NOT use chemical exfoliants if you suffer from any type of acne. The chemicals could cause a flare-up and scar your face.
• DO NOT go for a waxing after having a chemical peel. The wax will certainly come off, but so will your skin!
